What a lovely tale (and a charming Nottinghamshire accent!). Even so, I can't help but wonder if your dad was showing his faith in you by making the call up, as a sort of way of helping you realise that you could write (hence no number being left). Either way it's pretty darn endearing so in no way is this suggestion cynicism!
